IS THE JANUARY 2012 PMI SIGNALING RECESSION?

Purchasing Managers' Index, January 2010-January 2012
(>50 - expansion; <50 - contraction)

The Purchasing Managers' Index for January 2012 (published on 15 February by the Association of Purchasing Managers), which covers manufacturing, shows a steep decline to 36.3, signaling a sharp contraction of manufacturing activity. This is the lowest level of the index since April 2009, in the middle of the 2008-2009 recession. Is the January PMI signaling a possible return to recession in 2012?
